Nu’uanu Pali Lookout – Hawaii’s Violent Past & Pretty Views

The Pali Lookout, a scenic viewing spot along the cliffs of the Nu’uanu Pali, has been a staple in my family’s guide to Oahu for many years. Whenever visitors from out of town would come to our home, I’d find myself back up here again, gazing down upon the Kaneohe Bay and fighting back the incredible gusts of wind that come with such amazing, elevated views.

I wouldn’t learn about the Pali Lookout’s violent history until later, when public schooling would have us study Hawaiiana. It was here that King Kamehameha I (or King Kamehameha the Great, as some called him) drove Kalanikupule, chief of Oahu, and his men off these cliffs in an effort to unite the Hawaiian Islands. It was kind of like that scene in 300, except with fewer chiseled abs and a lot more dead bodies.

Several ghost stories live within these mountains, as they do with many of the holy and historic sites throughout the Hawaiian Islands. Superstitions often involve Pele, the volcano goddess who always seems riled up about something or another. Anyone carrying pork through the Nu’uanu Pali would find themselves deterred until said pork was removed, an effect rendered by Pele’s dispute with a hog-human demigod…

It occurs.

The Beautiful Honolulu Museum of Art in Photos

Few museums are as peaceful as the Honolulu Museum of Art. On days of reflection like today (read: too many parties last night), I like to mentally revisit the time spent there, wandering through the courtyards and diving deep into its collection of fine art. It may not compete with the Met or even the Legion of Honor, but it’s beautiful and impressive in its own right. It’s ironic that a place so quiet can instill so much energy inside. Exploring Disney’s Aulani Resort in Hawaii

I recently visited Disney’s new Aulani Resort in Ko Olina, located in a beachside community thirty minutes west of Honolulu. I had been coming to this beach since it first opened when I was a kid, back when the water was absolutely clear and didn’t even sting your eyes when you opened them. The addition of the Aulani Resort definitely makes this area more happening. Free parking is virtually non-existent, though the crowds aren’t anywhere near Waikiki levels. With a lazy river, water playground and a snorkel pool with tropical fish, there’s plenty here to keep kids and adults occupied. And while the Disney presence is existent, it’s not overly expressed.

Good show, Disney.

Honolulu International Airport Gardens - Girl on Bridge

The Beauty of Honolulu International Airport

I spent the past ten years of my life arriving and departing “home” with Honolulu International Airport. The most difficult time I had leaving Oahu was during the end of my first winter break of my first year in college. Having to leave family and familiarity was particularly hard, but the gardens in HNL served as a mild comfort.

While HNL may not be the most updated of airports, it exudes a quiet elegance that I hope these photos can demonstrate. For the complete collection, visit my Honolulu International Airport photoset on Flickr or view them in the slideshow below.

Exploring the Big Island – Must-see spots in and around Hilo

It’s surprising that though I grew up on Oahu, it wasn’t until last Friday that I took my first trip to the Big Island. My expectations were met, as the island is as beautiful as popular media makes it sound. It is the land of Pele, the vengeful goddess of lava and lightning (not to be mistaken with the soccer player), and the birthplace of King Kamehameha I, the great uniter of the Hawaiian Kingdom. In other words, it is the archetypal capital of the islands. Continue reading “Exploring the Big Island – Must-see spots in and around Hilo”

PHOTOS – Songs That Remind Me of Places

I love how hearing songs can help one rediscover places frequented long ago. The way smells seem to bring back forgotten memories (Juicy Fruit gum for me, for some reason), it’s like you’re transported back to when that sensation of being was first mentally recorded. Usually emotive, intense nostalgia can be both fun and scary.

Is there a song that reminds you of a place? How does it make you feel? Let me know in the comments. And please click the images to get a deeper story on where each photo came from…

I’m in Vancouver for my cousin’s wedding. I had been listening to Carla Bruni’s “Tout le monde,” finding the music video where she emerged through a dark tunnel as particularly relevant to international travel (even to Canada). While I didn’t have to pass any dark tunnels, Vancouver was definitely a light at the other end of the path. Pristine, brisk and full of natural beauty, it was a great escape from the normalcy of everyday life.

Coldplay always reminds me of my time at The Conversation Group, most likely because it was there that I first listened to Viva La Vida. While it was bittersweet, as all their songs are, it leaned more to the sweet side.

I’m home in Hawaii for Christmas and I find an unopened copy of Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Show Your Bones in my parents’ collection. No one is really sure how it got there, so I immediately enjoy the album and claim it for myself. While I didn’t care for YYYs after hearing “Maps” in college, the songs on Show Your Bones really resonated with me. I’ve since gone back and acquired their previous releases, but this album is still my favorite.

I spend about 13 hours wandering around Manhattan while listening to Rilo Kiley the entire time. I have tickets to their upcoming show at the The Warfield and I need a crash course on their discography before heading back home. While this isn’t my favorite song from their first few albums, it’s the one that reminds me most of wandering around for hours. Another good candidate would be “All the Good That Won’t Come Out,” a song I recall hearing a lot despite the random rotation.

Another one in New York City: I’m at the Brooklyn Bridge, and hearing this song reminds me of the other, more familiar ocean. When I hear this song, I imagine drifting away on waves into the vastness of the ocean, a characteristic of the sea I’ve always marveled at.

“The ocean rolls us away… away… away…”
