I’m happy to announce that I’ve signed with a literary agency, and my novel is currently being sent out to publishing houses!
Title: THE BAMBOO BROTHERS
Genre: Historical Fiction
Word Count: 93,000
Two brothers witness their bucolic lives in rural China upended when bandits destroy their village. Forced to flee, they enlist as railroad workers and follow an exodus of Chinese laborers to California. Thoughts of returning home accompany them as they endure the foreign and often brutal conditions of the American frontier. Little do they know that the troubles of their homeland have also emigrated to find them in the new world, threatening their bond and making them question what it means to find “home.”
This story of adventure and survival shines a light on the rarely explored topic of Chinese railroad workers in 1860s America, their family bonds and the immigrant experience. Readers interested in American history told from an underrepresented perspective might enjoy this story, particularly fans of Colson Whitehead and Hernan Diaz.
You can read more about the history here.
I’m a writer and editor based in San Francisco. I’ve covered travel and culture for various publications and international organizations. As a son of Chinese immigrants, many of the themes I included in this story reflect the experience my parents also had of arriving in the United States, namely finding a place for themselves while seeking a sense of identity.
